ASTRO: Autonomous Systems and Space Robotics Lab

The Autonomous Systems and Space Robotics Lab (ASTRO) is dedicated to cutting-edge robotics research, with a particular focus on off-world exploration and operation in harsh environments. ASTRO conducts pioneering research in field robotics, multi-agent coordination, and onboard AI reasoning to enable robots to operate reliably and autonomously in environments where human intervention is difficult or impossible—especially in space!

By bridging computer vision, control theory, and rugged hardware engineering, the laboratory develops resilient and adaptive robotic architectures designed to enable the next generation of autonomous off-world operations.

And, of course, we have not forgotten our roots on Earth! Our current research also includes autonomous racing vehicles, quadrupeds, humanoids, and robotic manipulators.

Current Projects/Platforms:

We are building a Quadruped for NASA’s Lunabotics competition. The current version of the platform, called RoboRhino, is seen to the right. Visit the page on Lunabotics for more information.

One of the platforms that we work on is the RoboRacer platform that has been customized with AMD hardware for UCF internal competitions. Please see the RoboRacer page for more information.
